My iPod #445: Blink-182 – Going Away to College

Tom DeLonge is not a member of Blink-182 anymore. Seems strange just typing that sentence. I was confused as everyone else when the events leading up to his departure starting appearing on Twitter, and still am weeks later. Doesn’t seem right not having the three guys together. But that’s how it goes I guess.

Let’s go back to a more simple and happier time by discussing today’s track, “Going Away to College”. The song is track four on Blink’s breakthrough album Enema of the State from 1999. The notes at the end of “Aliens Exist” merge straight into the lone guitar by Tom which starts “College” off before the Mark and Travis join in. It is mainly written by Mark Hoppus, I assume as he takes the lead vocals on it, and is from the perspective of a guy who we’ll guess is going away to college soon and is having all these feelings about leaving his loved one behind. There’s nothing much else to it. It’s a very sweet three-minute pop punk love song. One of my favourites from that album. So much so that I added it to my version of their Greatest Hits compilation which I then went to upload on YouTube. You won’t find it. That account got terminated.

Just a note, you might want to listen to this and “What’s My Age Again?” together. Makes it a bit more complete if you ask me.

My iPod #371: Blink-182 – First Date

“First Date” was the second single from Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, Blink’s album released in 2001. Mostly written by Tom DeLonge, the track is told from the perspective of a guy…. on the way to pick a lady up for their first date. Duh.

The verses capture the narrator in a doubtful mood. What if I dance, will she think it’s lame? My hair looks stupid. I can’t eat I’m so nervous etc etc etc. But the chorus changes that, seeing the narrator in a more hopeful and optimistic manner hoping that this first date will be the start of something that will last for a very long time. Very cute, to be honest.

The video for it is probably one of the funniest the band have done. Mostly because of Tom.

I think the first time I heard the track was waaay back when I was in Year 6 or something. A friend of mine started singing it spontaneously. We were both into the same kind of music at the time which was cool. Obviously I’d never heard the song before. I asked what he was singing. He gave the answer. Life went on from there. Good times.

My iPod #366: Blink-182 – Feeling This

“Feeling This” was the first single released from Blink-182’s self-titled album from 2003. The track was the first thing to show the pop-punk group’s new serious direction the three members decided to pursue, instead of being seen as those toilet-humour rascals who ran around naked in their music videos.

The track is about being in love and the endless feelings and possibilities that arise when in the situation. Tom and Mark have a call and response thing going on in the verses and their vocals come together through the majority of the track with the two having a duet as the song reaches its ending, making it one of the more collaborative songs on the album.

It’s a great way to start things off – placed anywhere else on the tracklist it wouldn’t have the same effect and would probably be considered as filler – and it provides that sweet energy that a listener wants when hearing an album for the first time.

My iPod #305: Blink-182 – Dumpweed

Well, no one answered my question that I raised in yesterday’s post. Eh, who needs ya anyway? I’ve just taken it upon myself to not do that post, which means that today is the last track from the ‘D’ section. It’s Blink-182 with the song “Dumpweed”, the opening track from their popular album “Enema of the State”.

“Enema of the State” is a good album. Quite a short one too, but filled with fast pop-punk songs about relationships, adolescence and aliens at one point. “Dumpweed” kicks the album off with tremendous pace and urgency. It’s one about a relationship too. The track has Tom detailing the problems of being with a girl who is unpredictable. Cute one time, and crazy the next. He wishes to have a girl ‘that he can train’ which I’m sure has gotten him into problems with some people. But it isn’t meant to be taken seriously, guys. Look at the album title.

The track also marked the introduction of a certain Travis Barker, then the new drummer for the band, who keeps the track’s energy alive with his versatility and rapid drum fills. Certainly a change for the better, I think every Blink-182 fan will agree on that.

So yeah, those are the “D” songs – bar one that I have on my iPod. I normally take a break after covering a letter of the alphabet. When the next one is coming…. I don’t know. But you can take the time to read the rest of the tracks I have on here.

Bye bye.

My iPod #298: Blink-182 – Down

Hi WordPress people, and the dedicated Blogger followers.

This is my new home now. Looks good so far.

For anyone new, how are you doing? I’m Jamie. This is my blog where I comment on the songs I have on…. my iPod. Been doing it for a year and a few months now as you can see, and I actually do plan on finishing it however long it takes.

Have fun reading the previous ones. Look forward to the ones that come too.

Here’s “Down”, a track from Blink-182’s self-titled album from 2003. It came on one time on MTV2 in the UK, and I thought “ooh, a new Blink-182 song”. That was probably in 2005 or something. I didn’t know the song existed before then. Sounds bad, I know. But when the video is never shown on the television, how could I?

I like “Down”. It’s really depressing though and a bit of a downer to listen to. There’s not much else I can say about it. It’s not my favourite Blink song, but it’s still decent.
