#1278: Graffiti6 – Stare into the Sun

The only reason I know of Graffiti6’s ‘Stare into the Sun’ is because of the song’s inclusion on the soundtrack for the 2011/12 iteration of EA Sports’ FIFA series of videogames. A roundabout way of saying FIFA 12. At that time, my GCSEs were over and done with. I was now onto studying for my A-Levels. It was quite the raise in difficulty. But instead of devoting more time into researching and putting more effort into my work at home, I carried on my usual tradition of buying the yearly FIFA game and dedicating time to that instead. My original YouTube account also got taken down around this period, so I think I was a little depressed. But the FIFA soundtrack wouldn’t let me down, it hadn’t since 2002. And ‘Stare into the Sun’ was a major, major highlight from there.

In ‘Stare into the Sun’, songwriter Jamie Scott sings about looking around at all the happy couples being together in the summer sun after having recently had his heart broken himself. He’s on his own, he’s feeling low. Feeling blue, as he says in the lyrics. But he also knows that this is how life goes, and after he’s done crying, he’ll be able to see the light and have brighter days coming his way. You see where the whole ‘staring into the sun’ metaphor comes into play. The music’s all upbeat and sprightly, got these whistles/xylophones that sort of heighten the positive energy. That descending piano riff at about 20 seconds in and what closes the song out too was enough to get me interested in the first place. Overall, what you’ve got in ‘Stare into the Sun’ is one of those happy-sounding songs about a sad situation. It’s a type that I’m usually into, and when it’s done well, it’s an instant like on my end. So here I am hopefully writing an engaging overview about it.

Hearing the track repeatedly through the TV speakers, I reckoned the track was sung by an American group potentially fronted by a Black vocalist. As you can see from the music video, it is not. And the group are from London. Just saying this ’cause it’s true, not to complain or anything. Doesn’t effect how I enjoy the track in any way. This was probably one of the last tracks I came to know from a FIFA soundtrack. I got FIFA 13 the next year, and that was the edition where I suddenly realized EA Sports were barely putting in any effort into the games anymore. Plus, the soundtrack was kind of unremarkable. That was the true sign that things weren’t right. The song can be found on the group’s Colours album, which then got re-released with new artwork and an extended tracklist. ‘Stare into the Sun’ probably got the re-release treatment too, as it then got another official music video made for it. Think I prefer the one above, though. It’s all the same song.

#1214: Taking Back Sunday – Sink into Me

After releasing Louder Now back in 2006 and going through the whole touring and promoting singles process, Taking Back Sunday took an extended break. During it, guitarist Fred Mascherino departed the band on not such great terms. A shame because, at least to me, he was the guy who always gave the great backing vocals and provided the lead guitar in all the Louder Now songs I liked. Whatever the band were to come back with would obviously never be the same. That was all in 2007. Wikipedia says that they announced new guitarist Matthew Fazzi in 2008. It’s not something I can remember myself, but I’ll take its word. But new music by the band wouldn’t arrive until a year later, when the new lineup was marked with the arrival of the new single ‘Sink into Me’.

The video played on MTV2 a lot of the time from what I can recall. It was very clear that this Taking Back Sunday was going to be much different from that of the last album cycle. Compared to the likes of ‘MakeDamnSure’ or ‘Liar (It Takes One to Know One)’, ‘Sink into Me’ went for a sort of rawer feel. Almost sounded like something of a punk song. Almost. And the 14-year-old I was at the time was all for this new direction. The guitarist may have changed, but Adam Lazzara’s voice hadn’t changed all that much. And though the prominent backing vocals once covered by Mascherino weren’t there anymore, the constant “hey heys” in this track can’t compare, the loss was more than made up for by the general energy and thrill the music provided. I feel like it must have been a sign for big, big Taking Back Sunday fans that things were gonna be just fine.

In my case though, I never heard another Taking Back Sunday song from this period of the band. I don’t think there was a video made for another track from New Again. If there was, it definitely didn’t play on the TV over here in the UK. So everything about the album sort of came and went. ‘Sink into Me’ always stuck with me though, so that’s why I’m here today to talk about it. Never thought about what it could be about before. If I were to guess… maybe some sadomasochism thing going on. There are usually some sexual undertones in Lazzara’s lyrics, I don’t think it’d be wrong to say it’s the same here. Just a shame that this lineup of the band didn’t stick around for a longer time. Not even a year had passed and Fazzi was let go by the band along with their bass guitarist. Or they both stated they were leaving. Since then, haven’t listened to any new Taking Back Sunday at all really. But I hope they’re all doing well.

#670: Radiohead – Jigsaw Falling into Place

I got In Rainbows as a gift just because of this song. Either Christmas or a birthday, I can’t remember – either way it doesn’t matter much. The album had been out for a few months though. Unfortunately I was 12 at the time and didn’t have much patience for listening through albums. So when I say I got the album because of this song, I mean I basically didn’t pay attention to every other track that was on there. Not the brightest decision. Took a few more years after to realise that I had a great album just sitting on the shelf in my house.

‘Jigsaw Falling into Place’ was the first single from In Rainbows, the first time that I remember some kind of hype for the arrival of a Radiohead album. The strangely hypnotic video (seen above) was on MTV2 all the time, repeated constantly at various times throughout the day, and it was through watching that that its words and music were slowly ingrained into my memory. Back then, I thought it was a fantastic song. Even moreso at this time after closer listening with headphones.

The song, from what I gather, is about getting drunk, flirting and dancing on a night out but described in the quite abstract and surreal way that Thom Yorke usually does in his lyrics. The song subtly builds in intensity from the very start. The woozy ‘err/ahhh’ backing vocals and busy bassline. The general groove is on point and never provides a moment to breathe Electric guitars eventually join in. And then the moment that every Radiohead fan notes, Yorke’s sudden jump in octave when the beat goes round and round. Each element included in the four minutes ‘Jigsaw’ lasts for work perfectly in tandem. A part in particular that I’ve noticed nearing the end is where some acoustic guitar strums pan from the left channel to the right channel the backing vocals close everything out. Radiohead fans love this track. I don’t think it’s too bad myself. Just a shame they rarely perform it live.

My iPod #465: The Beatles – Got to Get You into My Life

“Got to Get You into My Life” is the jubilant, horn-heavy, Motown influenced ode to marijuana written by Paul McCartney, appearing as the penultimate track on the Revolver album. Why do I say it’s an ‘ode to marijuana’, you may be thinking. Well because that’s what it is. McCartney said it himself; the statement can be read in this authorised biography. Sorry to all those who’ve thought it was a typical song about yearning for love. But the real influence behind it makes the track all the more clever, slick and a bit humourous.

But when the first note plays and the blaring horns play the memorable introductory phrase it doesn’t matter what it’s about, you just know that the song is gonna be a good one. It doesn’t disappoint. Paul pulls off yet another stunningly smooth vocal take amongst the aforementioned brass instruments, leaping from the tamest of notes to the other end of the spectrum in a matter of milliseconds. It’s may be a bit worthy to note that Paul is the sole Beatle to sing on here with no harmonies from John and George, something that’s eventually mirrored by the former’s sole vocal presence on the next track. Still the two are make their presence known in the music, particularly George who from out of nowhere brings out a stellar lead guitar solo at the song’s climax, cueing the celebratory coda.

A brilliant track. It’s the last song on the album that you can get up and sing your heart out to before things get a bit philosophical and spaced out for “Tomorrow Never Knows”. Really dig it.
