#1043: Nick Drake – Place to Be

Well, well, it’s Nick Drake again. Though this won’t be the last time I write about him on this website, it’ll be the last time you’ll see a track of his in this particular section. Who knew that basically a quarter of the songs on Pink Moon began with the letter ‘P’? Never would have thought about it without this, would you? Not like it’s very useful information anyway. Representing the last of the Ps from Pink Moon today is the album’s second track, ‘Place to Be’. With the preceding title track providing a more surreal, symbolic take on Drake’s outlook on life, ‘Place to Be’ is where he lays the facts down straight.

I believe this track is the last one on the album on which he uses a plectrum to play his acoustic guitar, with the rest all consisting of his intricate fingerpicking. And as a result, just like the ‘Pink Moon’ track, ‘Place to Be’ has a very driving momentum to it with Drake playing the guitar with an air of confidence and striding force. The strings ring out with a rich tone to them, and the music overall lures you in with its warmth. But on top, Drake tells the listener how he is as the man who sings to you compared to the days of yesteryear, and he’s not doing too well. The lyrics are plain to understand. When he was younger, he was ignorant to the cold, hard truth. But now he has himself hardened as a person and can see things for what they are. He used to be vibrant and bright, but now has become darker in his moods. He asks to be given a place to be, and by that I assume he means a place to just exist without any troubles. Maybe somewhere to belong. It’s left up in the air, but it taps into a feeling I’m sure is felt universally.

The third and final verse contains the most telling and hard-hitting revelation out of those listed in the previous two. Referencing his ‘Day Is Done’ track, which bear in mind was only released three years prior, he tells the listener that compared to then he was now the weakest he’s ever felt. So weak in a need for something or someone that isn’t fully disclosed. They’re just referred to as ‘you’. Maybe you is the ‘place to be’ itself. Maybe it’s a loved one. I’ve seen interpretations that suggest that ‘you’ is death. Any way you look at it though, it’s a sad affair. But instead of making it too melodramatic, he transferred his energy into an beautiful earnest acoustic performance. It does make you wonder how things changed so much for the worse for him in that relatively short amount of time.

#670: Radiohead – Jigsaw Falling into Place

I got In Rainbows as a gift just because of this song. Either Christmas or a birthday, I can’t remember – either way it doesn’t matter much. The album had been out for a few months though. Unfortunately I was 12 at the time and didn’t have much patience for listening through albums. So when I say I got the album because of this song, I mean I basically didn’t pay attention to every other track that was on there. Not the brightest decision. Took a few more years after to realise that I had a great album just sitting on the shelf in my house.

‘Jigsaw Falling into Place’ was the first single from In Rainbows, the first time that I remember some kind of hype for the arrival of a Radiohead album. The strangely hypnotic video (seen above) was on MTV2 all the time, repeated constantly at various times throughout the day, and it was through watching that that its words and music were slowly ingrained into my memory. Back then, I thought it was a fantastic song. Even moreso at this time after closer listening with headphones.

The song, from what I gather, is about getting drunk, flirting and dancing on a night out but described in the quite abstract and surreal way that Thom Yorke usually does in his lyrics. The song subtly builds in intensity from the very start. The woozy ‘err/ahhh’ backing vocals and busy bassline. The general groove is on point and never provides a moment to breathe Electric guitars eventually join in. And then the moment that every Radiohead fan notes, Yorke’s sudden jump in octave when the beat goes round and round. Each element included in the four minutes ‘Jigsaw’ lasts for work perfectly in tandem. A part in particular that I’ve noticed nearing the end is where some acoustic guitar strums pan from the left channel to the right channel the backing vocals close everything out. Radiohead fans love this track. I don’t think it’s too bad myself. Just a shame they rarely perform it live.

#626: Coldplay – In My Place

At some point in time I completely forgot this song existed. I was seven when A Rush of Blood to the Head was released in the autumn of 2002 and I vividly remember the video for ‘The Scientist’ showing on TV. You couldn’t escape ‘Clocks‘ either, its opening was used in almost every advert. ‘In My Place’ was the lead single for the album, made available only two weeks before its eventual release, and I must have completely missed it.

Fast forward years later when I actually got the album (either for a birthday or Christmas) and I realised I hadn’t missed the song at all. I had heard it many times actually. I just didn’t know what the song was or who it was by. The question I hadn’t thought about asking had been answered. This is probably my favourite Coldplay song. It’s all in that guitar riff and the strings that play throughout. As soon as that introduction starts I feel all warm and cosy inside. There’s just a loose and freeing feel about the production that makes the track a very comfortable listen.

Chris Martin’s alright on here. He sings just fine. He doesn’t overdo it which is just what the song needs. When that chorus hits and he goes into that high ‘yeeeeeeah’ along with the rising guitar and cymbals it adds an extra layer of bliss. Never really liked the final verse though, if you could call it that, it doesn’t add much to the song’s substance and I always tend to skip it if I’m singing along to it…… but all in all the whole package is brilliant.

My iPod #339: Radiohead – Everything in Its Right Place


“Everything in Its Right Place” is the opening track on Radiohead’s “Kid A” album, one where the band completely diverted away from their heavy guitar-driven music to warmer, electronic material. Fans waited for three years after “OK Computer”, full of anticipation with what Radiohead could deliver. Apparently, “Kid A” polarized many. Either people loved it ‘cos of the new musical direction, or hated because of the same reason. Whether the band made the change to make people not like it as much, I’m not sure. The members, especially Thom Yorke, were burnt out from the success that “OK Computer” gained. “Kid A” made them a lot more successful anyway.

I was five when the album was released, and so have no recollection of anything Radiohead did. Who were Radiohead? I didn’t know; I was in Year 1. But I eventually got round to listening to “Kid A” (and “Amnesiac” for the hell of it) in 2012. Why did it take me so long? Well…. I think I used to label those years as the period where Radiohead went a bit weird. The first song I remember liking from them was on “Hail to the Thief”, and their singles I usually saw on the TV were “Creep – OK Computer” era. It wasn’t until I actually researched that both albums were very much appreciated, that I thought I would listen to them.

And so “Everything in Its Right Place” started playing, and it was then that I realised I might have been missing out on something. Everything about it is just so peaceful, calm and tranquil even though the lyrics are from the perspective of a person going through some problems of their own. Got a steady 4/4 beat playing against a 10/4 time signature, unconventional yet wouldn’t sound out of place in any dance/house party. And the song’s only made up of four phrases which are repeated in many different and memorable ways, that when you think one will be repeated again the track begins to fade out. And then it’s gone.

I’ve seen comments from people saying that Radiohead should start playing guitars again but they did do this song, cut them some slack.
